School vows to ditch soft drinks

St Brigid’s Primary School, located in Gisborne, Victoria, has become the region’s first ‘water only’ school in a bid to improve student health.

The school’s policy is being supported by local supplier, Western Water, and aims to ensure that students have easy access to drinking water.

The company recently provided an extra drinking fountain on the school grounds and has given all students and teachers reusable drink bottles.

Deputy principal, Kathleen McCann, told Star Weekly that the school would also work towards reducing the sale of sugary drinks in the canteen.

The school community is now being encouraged to become positive health role models by not bringing soft drinks into the school.

The water-only schools concept has already flowed through some schools in the Goulburn Valley and Geelong regions.
