Defining innovation in the education sector

In this edition of The Educator TV, we sat down with Fathma Mauger and Danni Mattiazzo, Head of Curriculum and Assessment Senior Teacher at Larrakeyah Primary School. Larrakeyah was mentioned in the 5-Star Innovative Schools 2023 awards report, highlighting the top innovative schools in the country.

Larrakeyah’s approach to innovation is not pursued for its own sake. Rather, it is implemented purposefully to enhance learning outcomes. The school implemented a selection of programs designed to foster creativity, problem-solving, and leadership. The programs include STEAM Days, focusing on science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics and the Quest Program, an innovative learning initiative designed to connect students with real-life inquiry-based learning.

Student-led innovation is at the forefront of Larrakeyah, with the school empowering students to take ownership of their own learning. Students are encouraged to take an open-minded approach to new ideas and invest in professional development. A standout example was students addressing a local problem by creating a robot prototype to deter bats from decimating local mango farms.

Mauger and Mattiazzo expressed the importance of teachers embracing innovation as well as staying current in their field. Teachers attend conferences and visit other innovative schools to stay up to date and informed on the latest trends in education. When asked about the school’s approach to innovation, Mauger noted:

"An innovative mindset is part of the school culture. Teachers are encouraged and supported to think outside the box. Professional development is essential so that teachers understand what innovation is."
