HAVE YOUR SAY: Is there an ideal age for starting school?

Absolutely agree. We moved from WA to Victoria and our daughter was 3 days past the Victorian cut-off. Despite teachers' recommendations and our support backed by research (my husband and I are both teachers), it was advised that she repeat a year in Victoria. One of the reasons given was that there were students in the class who would be 18 months older than her, because their parents had decided to delay them starting school. It didn't seem fair that because of this it meant our daughter was expected to repeat a year. Eventually we had her assessed by a psychologist and inadvertently discovered her IQ was in the gifted range. The school finally relented at this point and allowed a direct transfer. Imagine a gifted child having to repeat a year due to a 3 month difference in starting age between states! Ridiculous!
