Fairness in Religions in School (FIRIS) would like to clarify the statement made within the article regarding our position on ethics. FIRIS is opposed to the system in which Special Education in Ethics is currently offered for students who parents/caregivers have opted them out of Special Religious Education (scripture). FIRIS has serious concerns about a system in which students are exposed to material which the Minister for Education has no legislative authority to direct or control. FIRIS also believes that flawed Department of Education policy and procedures is resulting in breaches of their duty of care to all students, particularly in consideration of the recent Queensland DET report on the Sydney Anglican's Connect SRE curriculum. FIRIS would like to make it clear that we do not oppose the inclusion of philosophy/ethics in a formal curriculum developed by education departments and taught by professional teachers employed by relevant education departments.
