As the two major parties spar over school funding, one principal tells The Educator why Australia is falling behind where it counts the most.

The St Paul's Principal missed his chance to capitalise on his accurate comment that Australian parents and kids do not take seriously enough the necessity for a thorough and meaningful education, as do our Asian neighbours and most European countries. What we need is higher expectations from all the key players. Too many young people leave school with nothing, and it is entirely on them, and their families, that this is so, just as are the high standards acquired by other countries.
It is high time we stopped giving kids trophies for just turning up.
